Podcasting In Schools
April 3, 2008 by aylin7
Charlene’s thoughts on podcasting in schools raise some valid points on how it can be used. Her comments refer to children with learning difficulties benefiting by listening to others comments. I think it is beneficial for these students to learn this way as it provides both visual image and audio sound. I have also discovered a website called onlypodcasting.com which outlines the benifits that students with learning difficulties can get by podcasting online. It also takes us into the future of podcasting which is quite interesting.
I think that teachers need to get creative and start incorporating such programs with different KLA’s. It is a good way to introduce public speaking skills for example it allows students to assess themselves with things such as eye contact, tone of voice, pitch etc. The teacher could also set up a audio journal where students can reflect on their learning experiences and comment on their peers.

Bookbinders: Fusing Technology, Image, and Literature
March 31, 2008 by aylin7
The article Bookbinders talks about today’s new literacy’s and provides us with examples of how students have made use of computers in the school environment. It is exciting to see students elaborations on specific tasks. Looking at the examples in the article showed individual creativity. Such programs open avenues for students originality and allows them to experiment. Students can form their own jugdements and make informed choices about their approaches to tasks.
These new literacy’s allow us to move beyond the printed page. It is more advanced then just simply reading text from a book. It allows students interpret icons and images to use to their advantage in future work places. Teachers need to recognise and teach all forms of literacy, this includes computer literacy. The teacher and student can work together in the learning process. The teachers needs to establish what students need to learn and think about skills and strategies to further students knowledge.

Luke make an interesting point about digital videos in schools. I think the ‘typical’ way of learning was the way it was is because of the available resources our primary school teachers had at the time but what is ‘typical’ for today’s teachers and students is a world filled with new media devices. The best way to teach our ’leaders of the future’ is to incorporate what they see around them whether it be cameras, computers or digital video cameras. The article Luke discusses provides us with useful insights that encourages teachers to motivate their students. Students are able to make their own connections by making videos and personal newscasts. I also think it is a great way for students to work collaboratively and reflect on each others work.

Interactive Whiteboards
March 30, 2008 by aylin7
Charlenes posting on interactive whiteboard poses a great emphasis on the benefits of using this technology within the classroom environment. While i was in Europe last year i was lucky enough to see the use of interactive whiteboards in a primary classroom. The teacher was able to get the students full attention and made to whole learning and teaching experience more holistic for the learners and herself. It is a effective method of saving time as teachers can prepare and save their presentations in advance.
I also discovered a website called virtualartroom.com. This is a good start for teachers and future teachers lesson ideas. It includes ways in which art can be incorporated using interactive whiteboards in our teaching methods. It sounds so simple but yet it opens a new avenue in the way students obtain information. With advancements in video games ‘new age children’ expect a certain standard of visual learning at school because visual graphics have become a normal part of their development. I think whiteboards can help students learn more effectively as learning becomes more relevant to their world.

-Bookbinders-
March 30, 2008 by aylin7
The article bookbinders talks about today’s new literacy’s and provides us with examples of how students have made use of computers in the school environment. It suggests that teachers need to recognise and teach all forms of literacy, this includes computers. This allows us to “move beyond the printed page”. By using computers in the classroom, allows students to interpret icons and images which will help most of them when entering the workforce. I think the teacher and student can work together in this process. Teachers need to determine what students need to learn and establish strategies to develop their computer skills.

Digital Storytelling- summary
March 26, 2008 by aylin7
The article explains how iMovie can be embedded into the classroom. Place project is about student creativity and storytelling. These stories provide students with opportunities to share stories, by expressing there feelings and emotions. Turning real life experiences into mini movies opens a whole new door of opportunities for students to reflect on themselves and each other.
The article provides teachers with useful tips to help their students develop fundamental skills using iMoive and make to process easier to teach. These include: Having students work in groups so they are able to help each other, show examples of previous work to encourage creativity, create individual folders for digital photos. Mentioned also are 4 easy steps teacher can use as a guide in the voice over process. eg. good environments for recordings to take place, importation of recordings etc.
I believe creating digital stories adds a whole new dimension to literacy. It can be an interacting process and puts more emphasis on students ideas. Students can watch and listen to their peers stories and have it open to a wider audience. It is a visual and hands on way to bring students thoughts and views to life which makes to learning experience relevant to them.

Classroom of the Future!

This You tube video clip takes us into the Classroom of the Future. I found the images very interesting as one day I could be teaching students in a similar environment. The Classroom of the Future consists of:
Large overhead projectors set up around the room. Each controlled by a remote from a wireless computer.
Wall mounted flat panels (which looks like a plasma)
Light weight tables (easy to move around)
Wireless network activity
Laptops
Scanners, printers, laminating machines, digital photo machines. (supports all multimedia)
What got my attention the most was cameras and listening devices set up on the sealing. This would allow students to broadcast classroom activity globally. Guest speakers could also use video conferencing to make speeches or presentations. This seems like only the beginning of technology in the classroom.

The New Literacy- Summary
March 21, 2008 by aylin7
Armstrong, S. & Warlick, D. (2004). The New Literacy. Techlearning.
This article stresses the importance of technology is future work placements. Most jobs these days heavily relay on computer technology. It makes comparisons with the nineteenth and twentieth century, disguising past literacy’s which were simply handed out by the teacher and future literacy’s which includes a global electronic library. The article justifies 4 basic skills which are essential for students to learn in modern technology.
- Finding information
- Decoding information
- Evaluating information
- Organizing information into personal digital libraries.
Included in the article are websites to help build the above skills. http://www.techlearning.com/story/showArticle.php?articleID=47102021
It is important that students learn how to write and communicate using multimedia. The article mentions electronic information being ‘eye appealing’. In has some what turned into a product. The content competes with our attention of what looks most appealing to us. Overall, educators need to teach their students basic skills to survive in the workplace and adapt to advancements in technology.
