I was interested in Jo’s posting on cyberbullying as i came across a student on my practicum, who was reading an email containing some very harsh words during free computer time. I immediately erased it and told the student not to pay attention to silly things like that and if it happens again to report it to the teacher. I think as adults we need to keep a realistic view on the negative effects the Internet can have and monitor exactly what students are doing while using computers.
During school hours teachers need to filter informal emails to ensure students are using computers for educational purposes only. I did a bit of research and discovered a website for children called ‘Stop Cyberbullying’. Children become familiar with types of bullying and also learn a range of steps they can taken to stop this form of harassment. It is also good to see these issues being brought up in the media (current affair, 60minutes) to make teachers and parents aware of the damaging effects it has on children.
